§ Dr. Hampsonasked the Prime Minister what are the responsibilities of the Secretary of State for Transport in respect of the British Transport police.
§ The Prime MinisterThe British Transport police are appointed and employed by the British Railways Board. They have similar powers and duties to local forces, but in relation to railway premises and property. Their operations are the responsibility of the chief constable, who reports to the British Transport police committee. The force and the committee were established and are governed by statutory provisions. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State thus has no direct responsibilities in respect of this force.
