HC Deb 23 April 1986 vol 96 c163W
Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he is taking to reduce the national shortage of qualified intensive care unit nurses.

Mr. Hayhoe

It is for health authorities to decide, in the light of local needs and priorities and the resources available to them, how many nurses they should employ who have received training in intensive care and how many trainees they should second to meet those needs. Most regional health authorities have been asked to refine the manpower planning and training components of their strategic plans and in considering these particular attention will be paid to proposals for staff groups who may be in short supply.
