Mr. Giles Shaw

The new police authorities for Merseyside, Northumbria and South Yorkshire, which took over responsibility on 1 April 1986, included proposals for increases in their police establishments in their manpower plans for the financial year 1986–87. The additional posts were intended for a range of purposes, including in some instances deployment in inner city areas. My right hon. Friend approved 72 additional police posts for Merseyside and nine for South Yorkshire.
