HC Deb 22 April 1986 vol 96 c113W
78. Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Paymaster General what proportion of the populatiom eligible for employment presently have an income below £100 a week.

Mr. Lang

Precise recent information is not available. However, according to the Family Expenditure Survey for 1984, excluding those aged under 16, the retired and those not seeking employment, about 46 per cent. of the persons surveyed had a gross weekly income of less than £100.

Gross income in this context did not include housing benefits or rate rebates. Also, the percentage covers persons seeking or in part-time employment.
