Sir Peter Horden

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish a table showing the level of expenditure on student grants each year since 1978, and the number of students attending universities and polytechnics, taken separately in those years.

The information is shown in the following table. The figures cannot be directly compared since awards are for students from England and Wales studying anywhere in the United Kingdom, while student numbers include postgraduates, part-timers and overseas students.
