HC Deb 21 April 1986 vol 96 cc50-1W
43. Mr. Gregory

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the estimated volume and value of road freight and rail freight for the most recent 12-month period for which statistics are available; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mitchell

The estimated volume of domestic road and rail freight in Great Britain in 1984 is:

Road Rail
Tonnes Lifted (millions) 1,444 79
Tonne—Kilometres (billions) 106.9 12.7

There is no information on the value of the goods carried by either road or rail. However, the estimated cost of transporting the goods in 1984 is £20,100 million for road and £445 million for rail.

The figures for rail in 1984 are affected by industrial action related to the mineworkers' dispute. Further details of road and rail freight are available in Transport Statistics Great Britain 1974–84, available in the Library.
