HC Deb 21 April 1986 vol 96 c1W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Prime Minister if she will make a statement on co-ordination between the Department of the Environment, the Ministry of Defence and NIREX over the selection of, and consultations in connection with, sites for the disposal of civil and military nuclear waste.

The Prime Minister

The choice of site that may be suitable for the disposal of civil and defence nuclear waste rests with NIREX, as was the case with the sites announced by it on 25 February. In searching for sites NIREX approached a number of landowners, including the Ministry of Defence. Responsibility for the selection of a site solely for defence waste rests with the Ministry of Defence.
