HC Deb 21 April 1986 vol 96 cc19-20W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information he has about the possibility of the Soviet Union applying to join Interpol; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The Secretary-General of Interpol is reported to have said that the Soviet Union may seek to join Interpol to tackle a growth of crime in that country. Application for membership of the Interpol organisation has to be submitted by the appropriate governmental authority for the country concerned and is subject to approval by a two-thirds majority of the organisation's general assembly. It will be for Her Majesty's Government and other member countries to take a view if any application is made.
