HC Deb 21 April 1986 vol 96 c39W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food why he is not bringing forward proposals for the compulsory labelling of salt, sugar and fibre content in food.

Mrs. Fenner

The European Community Directive on Food Labelling does not permit the unilateral imposition by member states of extra food labelling requirements except in the circumstances described in article 15(2) thereof which would not justify compulsory labelling for salt, sugar or fibre. The proposed guidelines on voluntary nutrition labelling suggest a standard format which would include a declaration of fibre, sodium and sugars as part of the overall information that may be given.
