HC Deb 21 April 1986 vol 96 c35W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about United Kingdom famine relief in countries of the Horn of Africa.

Mr. Raison

In the calendar year 1985 the Government committed £40 million bilaterally and through the European Community for famine relief in Ethiopia and £1.5 million for Somalia. So far in 1986 similar commitments amount to £9 million for Ethiopia and £0.25 million for Somalia. Total commitments bilaterally and through the European Community for famine relief in the Horn of Africa as a whole have amounted to £77 million since the beginning of 1984.
