HL Deb 21 April 1986 vol 473 cc1063-4WA
Lord Gifford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What requests have been made to them for a public inquiry under the Police Act 1964 into the disturbances at Broadwater Farm, Tottenham, on 6th October 1985; and for what reasons they decided not to hold such an inquiry.

Lord Glenarthur

A motion calling for an independent judicial inquiry into the disturbances in inner cities last autumn, including that at Broadwater Farm on 6th October, was debated and rejected in another place on 23rd October. My right honourable friend the Home Secretary made it clear then, and has reaffirmed subsequently in response to other suggestions for an inquiry, that he does not, consider that an inquiry would usefully add to the action already being taken following the disturbances.
