HC Deb 21 April 1986 vol 96 c44W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what recent restrictions have been placed on the marketing in the United Kingdom and the European Economic Community of Australian and South African sherry; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Fenner

Under the terms of the treaty of accession of Spain and Portugal to the Community, the descriptions British, Irish and Cyprus sherry may continue to be used for products sold in the United Kingdom or Ireland for a period of 10 years, subject to review at the end of that period. There is no similar provision authorising the continued use of the descriptions Australian and South African sherry for products sold on Community markets.
