§ Mr. Chris Smithasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what opportunities have been made available to residents of the Teviot housing estate in the London borough of Tower Hamlets to participate in the current discussions between his Department's urban housing renewal unit and Tower Hamlets borough council concerning proposals for the transfer of their homes to the management and ownership of a private trust.
§ Sir George YoungIn 1984 there was a survey of tenants on the estate which invited their views on a variety of possibilities for improvement of the estate, one of which would have involved the establishment of a trust. A report of this exercise was published. Since then my 473W Department's urban housing renewal unit has taken part in discussions with the borough council on developing the trust idea further. No firm proposals have yet emerged, but if they do it will be essential for residents to be fully consulted and for their support to be enlisted if any scheme is to go ahead.
