HL Deb 17 April 1986 vol 473 c871WA
Lord Graham of Edmonton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they will take to see that the law is enforced against retailers who participated in a campaign on Sunday 6th April by opening their shops notwithstanding the existing legislation on Sunday trading and by inducing the public to patronise their shops by offering to pay one penny per customer to a charity.

Lord Glenarthur

The Government have made plain that the law on Sunday trading should be obeyed until such time as it is changed by Parliament. The duty of enforcing the Shops Act 1950 lies not with the Government but with local authorities.
