HC Deb 10 April 1986 vol 95 cc188-9W
Dr. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether there are any areas utilised by patients in National Health Service hospitals in which there are no restrictions on smoking; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Whitney

It is for health authorities to establish their own policies about smoking in their hospitals. Guidance issued last year by the Department suggests that non-smoking should be normal practice on health service premises, but that if smoking areas are permitted they should be arranged so that non-smoking patients, staff and visitors can be assured a smoke-free environment.
