asked the Paymaster General what has been the total number of entrants to date to the enterprise allowance scheme in the Cheltenham area; and at what cost to his Department.

The figures are not available in the form requested. However, in the Gloucestershire and Wiltshire area, which includes Cheltenham, 1,838 people entered the enterprise allowance scheme between its inception in August 1983 and the end of March 1986 at an estimated cost of £2.865 million in allowances.
