§ Mr. Winnickasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement on the latest position regarding the future of British Leyland.
§ Mr. Peter MorrisonI hope that the improvement in BL's performance in 1985 will continue. The Government will continue to support BL's efforts to increase competitiveness. The Government believe that the long-term future of the business is in private ownership and intend that the various operating companies be privatised at the appropriate time.
Discussions are taking place with potential purchasers of Land Rover and Freight Rover with a view to securing the best future for the businesses. The BL board also hopes to consider proposals relating to the future of Leyland Bus during April. For Leyland Trucks, the board will continue to examine possibilities for collaboration with other manufacturers and other ways to sustain its improving trend in performance.
There are no proposals at present to privatise Austin Rover and the company will continue to devote its efforts to the further development and growth of its business, building on the creditable progress already achieved.
Separate discussions are continuing with a view to the privatisation of Unipart by the early placement of shares with United Kingdom financial institutions.
