HC Deb 10 April 1986 vol 95 cc184-5W
Mr. Thurnham

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he has any plans to amend regulation 3 of the Mobility Allowance Regulations (SI No. 1573, 1975, as amended) following recent cases involving severely autistic children seeking mobility allowances; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

We have no plans to do so. Entitlement to mobility allowance is related to walking ability and not to specific disabilities. Recent decisions by the House of Lords and a tribunal of social security commissioners have clarified the law in various respects and should help the adjudicating authorities in their assessment of walking ability.
