Mr. Robin Cook

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) if he will publish in the Official Report the figures for the number of pre-school places per 1,000 of the under-five population in education authorities grouped by political control on the classification used by the Secretary of State for the Environment in his reply to the hon. Member for Blackburn (Mr. Straw) on 15 January, Official Report, column 577;

(2) if he will publish in the Official Report a table listing education authorities by the number of pre-school places they provide per 1,000 of the under-five population.

Information on the number of places is not available. The number of children aged under five years attending maintained nursery and primary school per 1,000 of the three and four-year-old population in January 1985 was as follows:
