HL Deb 08 April 1986 vol 473 cc189-90WA
Lord Blease

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the percentage of GNP spent on health care for each of the last three years for which figures are available; and, for the same period, what was the actual proportion spent under the publicly-financed National Health Service.

Baroness Trumpington

The table attached follows international conventions and expresses total expenditure on health care in the United Kingdom as a percentage of the gross domestic product at market prices (GDP). Health expenditure expressed as a percentage of gross national product at market prices (GNP) is also given. The share of public expenditure on the National Health Service in total health expenditure is also presented. These estimates have been derived from the most recently published national accounts (1985), and follow national accounting conventions.

TOTAL HEALTH EXPENDITURE EXPRESSED AS A PERCENTAGE SHARE OF
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Gross National Product (GNP)
1982 5.9 5.9
