HC Deb 29 October 1985 vol 84 c413W
Mr. Normanton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the Government regulations applicable to the manufacture of bread.

Mr. Jopling

The main regulations which apply to the manufacture of bread are, as follows:

  1. (a) the Bread and Flour Regulations 1963, as amended, to be replaced entirely on 1 July 1986 by the Bread and Flour Regulations 1984 covering England and Wales. Similar regulations exists in Scotland and Northern Ireland;
  2. (b) the Weights and Measures Act 1963 (Bread) Order 1977, the Weights and Measures (packaged goods) Regulations 1979, as amended and the Weights and Measures Act 1963 (Miscellaneous Foods) Order 1984 covering Great Britain. Similar legislation exists in Northern Ireland.

In addition, the manufacture of bread in the United Kingdom is subject to regulations which apply to foodstuffs in general, covering, for example, health and hygiene, labelling, contaminants and units of measurement.
