§ Mr. Marlowasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list in the Official Report the amendments which were considered by Her Majesty's Government to the statement on the middle east discussed with the two Palestine Liberation Organisation members of the proposed Jordanian/Palestinian delegation; and if he will indicate which of these amendments were acceptable to Her Majesty's Government.
§ Mr. RifkindThe Palestinian members of the joint delegation put forward without commitment the following wording in place of the statement already agreed with the Jordanian Prime Minister
The members of the joint delegation reiterated their personal support for a peaceful settlement between Israel and its Arab neighbours on the basis of the relevant United Nations resolutions, including Resolutions 242 and 338 of the Security Council, under the appropriate auspices. They stated that in accordance with these resolutions a settlement should recognise the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to self-determination within the context of a Jordanian/ Palestinian confederation, as well as the right of all states in the area to exist within the secure recognised boundaries. They confirmed their opposition to all forms of terrorism and violence from whatever source.We made clear our view that the statement would be acceptable only if it contained an explicit reference to the right of Israel to exist within secure and recognised borders.
