HC Deb 28 October 1985 vol 84 c367W
Mr. Coombs

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the number of kidney transplants in each of the last five years for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Whitney

The numbers of cadaver kidney transplant operations performed in the United Kingdom in each of the past five years, as reported to the United Kingdom transplant service, were as follows:

Numbers
1980 988
1981 905
1982 1,070
1983 1,144
1984 1,443

The Government launched a campaign in February 1984 to increase public awareness of the benefits of organ transplantation and to promote the donor card scheme, and the encouraging increase in kidney transplant operations performed in 1984 reflects the success of this campaign. Consideration is being given to how the momentum of the campaign might be maintained.
