HC Deb 28 October 1985 vol 84 cc371-2W
Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many claims for family income supplement following the miners' strike have (a) been referred to tribunal, (b) been heard, (c) remain to be heard and (d) have been determined: (i) in favour and (ii) against the appellant, in each Department of Health and Social Security region.

Mr. Newton

Appeals against the disallowance of a claim to family income supplement made by families of striking miners were recorded from 4 July 1984. Since then 959 claims from striking miners have been referred to the social security appeal tribunals. Of these 517 have been heard, 357 have been withdrawn by the claimant at the hearing and 85 are still outstanding. Of the claims heard, 27 were allowed and 490 were disallowed by the tribunal. The 27 cases allowed were referred to the commissioner. Figures are riot available on a regional basis.

Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many striking miners' families made claims for family income supplement during the 1984–85 strike; and how many of these claims were met.

Mr. Newton

From September 1984, when separate records were kept, there were around 2,700 claims to family income supplement from families of striking miners. All were disallowed.
