HC Deb 28 October 1985 vol 84 cc357-8W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has received regarding human rights violations in East Timor; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Rifkind

I have received letters from hon. Members on behalf of Amnesty International and others about human rights in East Timor and understand the concern. My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister raised East Timor with President Soeharto in April. The situation there shows some improvement. I should also refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Liverpool, West Derby (Mr. Field) earlier today.
