HC Deb 28 October 1985 vol 84 cc342-3W
Mr. Wrigglesworth

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will list the financial contributions made by his Department to each police authority towards the cost of policing the miners' dispute;

(2) if he will estimate the net cost of policing the mining dispute for each police authority in England and Wales.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Final claims for police grant and the special payment we made available for the additional cost of policing the miners' dispute relating to expenditure arising from the dispute in 1984–85 are now being received and have not yet been audited. It is not yet possible, therefore, to provide the information requested.

Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list for each police authority the total sums incurred by the Metropolitan police during deployment in the coal dispute, and for each authority, who has paid and who has not and in the latter case what action has been taken to recover the sums due.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The Metropolitan police estimate that the additional cost of providing mutual aid to other police forces in connection with the miners' dispute was £18.147 million. These costs fall to be met by the aided forces, and details, by police force, of the amounts involved and payments made by 9 October are set out below. The Metropolitan police are in correspondence with the police authorities in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and South Yorkshire about the outstanding amounts. My right hon. Friend is considering an application from the commissioner for a determination, under section 14(4) of the Police Act 1964, in respect of Derbyshire.

Mr. Giles Shaw
