HC Deb 24 October 1985 vol 84 c243W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a response to the representations made to Her Majesty's Government by the World Development Movement regarding aid to overcome famine.

Mr. Raison

As I announced on 22 October to the mass lobby of Parliament organised by the World Development Movement and the churches, we spent over £89 million on famine relief for Africa in 1984–85 from the aid programme; this year we will provide at least a further £75 million.

The Government will continue to play their part, alongside our European Community partners and the multilateral and voluntary agencies, in the essential international relief efforts as they continue next year.
