§ Mr. StanleyNATO's northern flank is of vital importance to the integrity of the Alliance and to the conduct of maritime operations, as well as to the defence of the United Kingdom itself. We therefore commit substantial resources to the defence of the region, details of which are given in paragraphs 430 and 431 of the Statement on the Defence Estimates 1985.
