§ Mr. Bestasked the Attorney-General if the investigation of possible offences in respect of the disappearance of the control room log of HMS Conqueror has been completed; and if he will make a statement.
§ The Solicitor-GeneralI refer to the answer which my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence gave to the hon. Member for Vale of Glamorgan (Sir R. Gower) on 30 November 1984. The Metropolitan police have now submitted their report on this matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who has concluded that the evidence available fails to show that any person committed a criminal offence in connection with the disappearance of the logs. He has also concluded that there is no reasonable prospect of further investigations producing any evidence of the commission of a criminal offence. I agree with both of these conclusions, and the police investigation has therefore been discontinued.
