asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which sectors of employment have shown the greatest percentage increases in the last twelve months, by comparison with 1980 onwards.

The following tables taken from the October issue of the Labour Market section of theEmployment Gazette list those industries in Great Britain which have shown the greatest percentage net increases in employees in employment:

  1. (a) between June 1984 and June 1985 (the latest date for which comprehensive figures are available), and
  2. (b) between June 1980 and June 1985.

Table 1 —Industries which have shown the greatest percentage net increases in employees in employment between June 1984 and June 1985 (1980 Standard Industrial Classification)

  • Extraction of mineral oil and natural gas. (Class 13)
  • Business services. (Class 83)
  • Nuclear fuel production. (Class 15)
  • Hotels and catering. (Class 66)
  • Research and development. (Class 94)
  • Banking and finance. (Class 81)
  • Insurance, except for compulsory social security. (Class 82)
  • Owning and dealing in real estate. (Class 85)

  • Extraction of mineral oil and natural gas. (Class 13)
  • Business services. (Class 83)
  • Owning and dealing in real estate. (Class 85)

  • Banking and finance. (Class 81)
  • Medical and other health services; veterinary services. (Class 95)
  • Insurance, except for compulsory social security. (Class 82)
  • Hotels and catering. (Class 66)
