HL Deb 21 October 1985 vol 467 cc949-50WA
Lord Molloy

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What influence is exerted by MI5 over the security vetting of staff at the BBC, and whether they will name the BBC staff members who are responsible for liaison with MI5 and Her Majesty's Government.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Glenarthur)

It is not the practice to comment on the work of the security service. The BBC's statement issued on 19th August made it clear that the BBC alone decides whom to appoint to any post within the corporation, and that no external agency has a right of veto on the appointment or promotion of any member of staff The functions assigned to particular members of the corporation's staff are a matter for the BBC.
