HC Deb 28 November 1985 vol 87 cc613-4W
Mr. Knowles

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish for each division in the Metropolitan police comparative numbers of the following ranks in post now and in 1960; deputy commissioner, assistant commissioner, deputy assistant commissioner, commander, chief superintendent, superintendent, chief inspector, inspector, sergeant and constable.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The Commissioner informs me that divisional figures for 1960 are not available. The breakdown by rank, of the officers in post in the Metropolitan police as a whole on 31 December 1960 and 31 October 1985 is as follows:

overall crime of 22 per cent. The effectiveness of crime prevention measures is also assessed in terms of their impact on the fear of crime, and the level of public confidence they generate measured for example by local surveys.
