HC Deb 26 November 1985 vol 87 c558W
33. Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the latest estimate of the cost of the Trident project.

Mr. Norman Lamont

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State announced an estimate of the cost of Trident of £9,285 million at 1984–85 prices and at an exchange rate of £1 = $1.38 on 29 January.

45. Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence in what ways the Trident independent deterrent will depend on United States technology.

Mr. Norman Lamont

The Trident D5 strategic weapon system, including its missiles, is to be purchased from the United States and will therefore use United States technology developed as part of their Trident programme. Co-operation with the United States on Trident in this and other areas does not affect the operational independence of the deterrent.
