HC Deb 26 November 1985 vol 87 c559W
39. Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he has had any discussion with the United States Administration about the defence implication for Britain of the outcome of the summit meeting between Mr. Gorbachev and Mr. Reagan; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Heseltine

My right hon. Friends the Prime Minister and the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary both attended President Reagan's briefing of the North Atlantic Council on the outcome of the meeting with Mr. Gorbachev. The Prime Minister made it clear that she was very grateful to President Reagan for his efforts to make the summit a success. We hope it will give a major impetus to arms control negotiations and to the improvement of East-West relations. I look forward to exchanging views about the outcome when I next see Mr. Weinberger.
