HC Deb 25 November 1985 vol 87 c383W
Mr. Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will outline his Department's current preferred method of disposal or storage of high level radioactive waste; and what basic requirements the method would entail;

(2) if he will publish a list of sites presently under consideration for the storage or disposal of high level radioactive waste.

Mrs. Rumbold

Present policy is to store for at least 50 years, initially in liquid and then in vitrified form. This will secure a significant reduction in radiation and heat generation, which will make ultimate disposal easier and allows work to continue on establishing the best method of disposal.
