HC Deb 19 November 1985 vol 87 cc142-3W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people from Bangladesh have (a) been given temporary admission to the United Kingdom and (b) absconded in each month since January 1984.

Mr. Waddington

[pursuant to his reply, 13 November 1985, c. 181]: I regret that the information requested in the first part of the question is not available. Information about the number of people from Bangladesh who have absconded and cannot be traced is available only from terminal 3 at Heathrow. It is as follows:

Number
1985
January-March 16
April-June 5
July-September 30
October 12
Total 63
1984
January-December 7
Total 7

The figures relate to the date on which the individual on temporary admission should have reported to an immigration officer or the police.

A person is not, however, counted as an absconder until efforts over a period of time have failed to trace him, and the figures for recent months are therefore subject to revision as inquiries are completed in further cases. The figures are therefore higher than those given in answer to a question from the right hon. Member for Bethnal Green and Stepney (Mr. Shore) on 29 October.
