Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the responsibilities of each of the deputy secretaries in his Department and the numbers and ranks of staff reporting to each.

Deputy Secretary: Criminal, general and statistical departments: and research and planning unit:
Three under-secretaries, one chief research officer and 528 other staff

Deputy Secretary: Police department:
Three under-secretaries, controller, forensic science service and 2,645 other staff
Deputy Secretary: Broadcasting, community programmes and equal opportunities, immigration and nationality, and passport departments:
Three under-secretaries and 3,933 other staff
Deputy Secretary: Establishments, fire and emergency planning, finance and manpower departments:
Three under-secretaries, one director of information services and 1,982 other staff
Deputy Secretary: Legal adviser's branch:
Two principal assistant legal advisers and 26 other staff
Deputy Secretary: Director-general of the prison service:
