Notes:

(1) The comparisons are affected by the change in the basis of the count in October 1982, and by the 1983 Budget measures which mean that older men, mainly over 60, no longer need to sign on at an unemployment benefit office in order to receive supplementary allowance or national insurance credits.

(2) The regional figures given are all based on aggregations of jobcentre areas since the duration analyses is not yet available from the new ward-based system.

(3) The total unemployment figures prior to October 1982 are given on the registration basis to be consistent with the available analysis by duration. Estimated totals on the claimant basis are however available and have been used to calculate the unemployment rates shown.
