HC Deb 24 May 1985 vol 79 cc599-600W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he is satisfied that the five Shackleton aircraft based at Royal Air Force Lossiemouth can provide adequate airborne early warning of low-level attack by SU-24 and TU-22 aircraft.

Mr. Stanley

As stated in the statement on the Defence Estimates 1985,the RAF's AEW Shackletons still make a useful contribution to AEW capability and the air defence of the United Kingdom".

(Vol. 1, paragraph 413).

It would not be in the public interest to specify the AEW Shackleton's operational capability against particular Soviet aircraft.
