§ 48. Mr. Peter Bruinvelsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will report on progress to date in the various compensation claims outstanding since the expulsion of Ugandan Asians from Uganda in the early 1970s.
§ Mr. RentonWhen my hon. Friend the Member for Edinburgh, Pentlands (Mr. Rifkind) visited Uganda in March, Ugandan Ministers told him that they were continuing to give priority to processing applications for repossession of property. They had received 1,700 such applications, of which over 800 were from claimants in Britain. Up to March they had made 131 offers of repossession to former owners, most of whom are in Britain.
459WThe Ugandans told my hon. Friend that they intend to deal with claims for compensation at a later date. There are 3,000 such claims of which slightly over 1,000 are from persons in Britain.
My hon. Friend urged the Ugandans to speed up this work.
