HC Deb 20 May 1985 vol 79 c353W
Mr. Chapman

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans he has to seek powers to require the farm recording of medicines used in food animals to ensure that prescribed veterinary medicines are correctly applied at the final stage.

Mrs. Fenner

My officials are currently discussing with the National Farmers Union and other organisations having an interest in this question the form of a voluntary code of practice for the responsible use of animal medicines on farms. The recording of the purchase and use of such medicines is a most important part of the code. The early introduction of a voluntary code of practice will represent a positive step in the direction which my hon. Friend has indicated, and by identifying practical problems which might arise, will produce helpful experience on which any future legislation can be based.

I am glad to say that the response of organisations consulted so far has been encouraging.
