Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) whether he will describe the steps he intends to take to maintain the continuity of services and staff that support the specialist services provided by the central computer services department within the Greater London council after the passage of the Local Government Bill;

(2) whether he will describe the steps he intends to take to maintain the continuity of services and staff that support the specialist services provided by the technical and scientific services within the Greater London council after the passage of the Local Government Bill.

A revised clause 86 to the Local Government Bill has been tabled in another place which provides for schemes for collective research and collection of information by London boroughs. It will be for the boroughs to decide what use to make of this power. I also refer the hon. Member to my reply today to the hon. Member for Stretford (Mr. Lloyd).
