HC Deb 16 May 1985 vol 79 c183W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what information he has as to the trend in real terms over the last five years of the pay of university staff in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Scott

The determination of the salaries of university staff is not a matter in which the Department of Education for Northern Ireland is directly involved. Any agreements affecting salaries, reached through the appropriate negotiating machinery in Great Britain, are automatically applied by the two universities in Northern Ireland.

A comparison of the current salaries of university teachers with those paid in October 1979 indicates that salaries have broadly kept pace with the retail price index.
