Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people on average have died (a) before the age of 60 years and (b) at 60 years and above of chest-related illnesses in (i) England and (ii) Wales, in each year since 1979.

The figures for 1984 are not comparable with earlier years, because of a change in coding following a rule of the World Health Organisation. In 1984 some deaths previously coded to bronchopneumonia have been allocated to other chronic conditions mentioned on the certificate.
