§ Mr. Giles ShawIn 1984 the investigation of 3,278 complaints against police officers alleging assault was completed; 112 complaints were substantiated. In the same year 12 police officers were convicted in the criminal courts of offences of violence and four were sentenced to terms of imprisonment.
