HC Deb 02 May 1985 vol 78 cc222-3W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will estimate the number of people admitted to hospitals in the last year in Scotland suffering from (a) ischaemic heart disease, (d) lung cancer and (c) bronchitis and emphysema.

Mr. John MacKay

Statistics about patients treated in hospital for various disorders relate to the numbers discharged, not to those admitted. Figures are not yet available for 1984.

In 1983 the following numbers of people were discharged from hospital in Scotland after treatment for (a) ischaemic heart disease, (b) lung cancer and (c) bronchitis and emphysema.

Principal diagnosis
Male Female Total
(a) ischaemic heart disease 19,110 11,342 30,452
(b) lung cancer 6,918 2,823 9,741
(c) bronchitis and emphysema 2,266 1,245 3,511
