HC Deb 02 May 1985 vol 78 c238W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much he estimates the procedures laid down in circular HC(85)9 for reimbursement of doctors acting as unit general managers or medical representatives will cost in the first full year to which it applies.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

No unit general managers have yet been appointed and we are not in a position to estimate how many will be doctors or what the cost of empmying them will be.

Unit medical representatives will be paid only by those district health authorities who wish to employ them for management duties and we cannot estimate how many DHAs will choose to do so. The remuneration of unit medical representatives is at the discretion of the district health authority up to a maximum of £2,500 per annum and is to be determined individually on the basis of their management commitments, where such commitments are part of the job description.
