§ 33. Mr. Nicholas Brownasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what factors are taken into account when calculating the salaries of chief constables; and whether he is reviewing the salaries paid to senior police officers including chief constables.
§ Mr. Giles ShawIn negotiations on increases in the pay of chief police officers, the Police Negotiating Board has been guided by the report of the Edmund-Davies Committee, published in July 1978, which recommended that the pay of police officers above the rank of chief superintendent should be updated annually by reference both to movements in the average earnings index during the previous 12 months and to changes elsewhere in the community. Last year, the board undertook a joint review of the pay of chief police officers, including an element of job evaluation. The findings of the review were taken into account by the board in negotiating increases in the pay of chief police officers with effect from 1 September 1984, which my right hon. and learned Friend recently approved.
