* General practitioners include all principals, assistants and trainees, and relate to 1 October.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social services what information he has concerning the number of midwives and health visitors employed in the north-western region in each of the years since 1978.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke:

The figures requested are as follows:

North-Western Region
Whole-time equivalent*
Staff in post at 30 September Midwives Health visitors‡||
1978 1,510 880
1979 1,550 920
1980 1,710 890
1981 1,680 910
1982 1,700 920
1983 1,850 1,050
* All figures are rounded to the nearest 10.
† Includes all state certified hospital and community midwives. Excludes agency staff.
‡ Includes health visitors in both the community and school health services, health visitor field work teachers, TB visitors with HV certificates, dual/triple posts and bank health visitors. Excludes HV students.
|| Due to changes in methods of data collection in 1980, wte staffing figures for health visitors from 1980 onwards are not directly comparable with those for previous years.

In addition, in September 1983, information on bank nursing staff was collected via separate manual returns, whereas they had previously been included with other staff on magnetic tape returns. A minor break in continuity will therefore exist between figures for 1982 and 1983.

Figures for September 1984 are not yet available at this level of detail.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton
