31. Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he has yet received the reports of the Director General of Fair Trading on the proposed takeover of Matthew Brown plc by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries.

Mr. Channon

My right hon. Friend announced on 24 April that he had decided in accordance with the recommendation of the Director General of Fair Trading, to refer the proposed acquisition to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

Mr. Straw

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will refer to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission the bid by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries plc for Matthew Brown plc.

Mr. Tebbit

I announced on 24 April that I had decided, in accordance with the recommendations of the Director General of Fair Trading, to refer the proposed acquisition to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.
